Hannah Horvath’s Best And Worst Outfits In Season 3 Of Girls, Part II (NSFW)

March 24, 2014

The third season of Girls is now over. It’ll be another year — another beautiful summer, lovely fall, and cheerful holiday season — before we’re back in the presence of Hannah.

In order to appropriately mourn this temporary loss, it seems important to round out a list that I started halfway through the season — Hannah’s best and worst outfits. There have been 5 episodes since that post went up, and many many outfits, some weird and some awesome and some insane.

Let’s get to it.

Episode 8, “Incidentals”

Category: WORST

I sort of wish I hadn’t set the precedent in the last post for writing the category in all caps, because this isn’t the WORST. It’s just flawed. The top part, I’m into. There ain’t nothing wrong with a collared shirt under a plain sweater with a nice necklace as an “I’m interviewing Patti LuPone today” outfit. The problem arises from the skirt, which is unfortunately loose. She’s all sleek on top, all summer in the country on the bottom.

THIS DRESS LOOKS SO GOOD ON HER.

When Hannah walks out of that fancy store wearing this dress, she’s a new woman. She wears it for the rest of the episode, and she looks so so good the whole time.

The key, as we’ve seen again and again, is FITTED. This dress hugs her curves (not unlike her bright yellow golden globes dress), showing off her body in the best possible way. It’s just awesome.

Episode 9, “Flo”

When Hannah heads upstate to see her sick grandmother, she’s wearing a totally normal weekday outfit — blue skinny jeans and a blouse. She looks great.

…Unfortunately, later that night her cousin asks if she wants to get a drink. Now, where I come from, “getting a drink” on a weeknight — especially in upstate NY — wouldn’t require a change of outfit from what she was wearing previously. Skinny jeans and blouse: also perfect for this.

However, Hannah’s choice to change into a dress that could definitely be worn to a club indicates her age. In my early twenties, I sometimes thought I was supposed to wear club-stuff all the time. I was wrong, though, and so is Hannah.

This picture just further illustrates how weird this dress is. And I know that she didn’t plan to end up visiting her grandmother while wearing it, but still. That back-hole is real big, and it stretches.

Episode 10, “Role-Play”

This is a rough scene all around, and it’s not helped by the fact that Hannah is wearing an un-belted nightshirt. I hate everything about this “dress”: the fruit print, the lack of shape, the v-neck. I don’t think this would look good on anyone.

However, later in this episode, she plans to seduce Adam at a bar. She wears a really cool outfit that’s not too crazy but not too tame — it’s that top from episode 8, but this time it’s paired with a tight black skirt. It looks bangin.

(I also, honestly, don’t hate the wig.)

But… underneath that great outfit was this. Which I don’t know much about and therefore have no ability to judge but like, WHAT IS IT? And is she supposed to be wearing underwear underneath it? On the one hand, I could see why she’d want to be, but on the other hand, I think it sort of kills the intended effect.

I can’t believe she just had this hanging around.

Episode 11, “I Saw You”

Great little blue dress for her second visit with Patti LuPone.

When she gets fired/quits, Hannah is again appropriately wearing skinny jeans and a blouse — this time green on bottom, orange on top. Classic but interesting.

It was hard to see this entire dress (which she wore to Marnie’s open mic and then out with Adam’s theater friends), but from what I could tell it was very nice. I like the top of it a lot; again, it’s interesting but not wild. And it seemed like a good fit on her. Plus, good earrings.

Episode 12, “Two Plane Rides”

Category: WORST

In the season finale, Hannah started the episode wearing the most INSANE pleated pants of all time. Where did she find those??

But that’s her only bad choice in this episode. After she finds out about Iowa and changes out of her pleats, she puts on a lovely red strapless number. It fits her all over — nothing is squeezing out on top, and it hits at her waist and heads out, accentuating her shape. Paired with that eyeliner job (which I actually found pretty impressive, but maybe that’s because I really don’t know how to be good at eyeliner), she looks beautiful.

Season Winner: Yellow and Black Dress from “Incidentals”

This (presumably very expensive) dress is the best thing Hannah wore all season. Interestingly, it’s like a correct version of the yellow and black dress she wore in “Only Child” — same color scheme (yellow definitely looks great on Lena) and same general idea, but done right. It clings to her instead of hanging on her. It lifts her up.

Wherever Hannah is next season, I hope that she wears more dresses like this.
